Here are some suggested talking points to use during a conversation:
- This bill is sponsored by State Senator Mark Leno from San Francisco. It was previously sponsored by Senator Sheila Kuehl. It has passed through both houses of the legislature in Sacramento TWICE and both times was vetoed by Governor Schwarzenegger.
- Do you have health insurance? Do you know someone who is uninsured? What do they do if they get sick?
- Research shows that people respond better when you lead using a moral argument for single payer. Facts and numbers are dry; remember these are human beings we are talking about. It is unjust that in a country as wealthy as ours, people are dying and losing their homes because they don’t have health insurance. This issue affects everyone.
- Let them know that there are many organizations of health professionals who support this legislation: doctors, nurses, medical students, i.e. Physicians for a National Health Program, California Nurses Association, American Medical Student Association.
Once again, these are just suggestions that some of us use when we’re out talking to folks. Please share your own “talking points” with us, we can post them here so that others can benefit from your knowledge and experience as well!
